Education

Overview

Argentina guarantees access to free education to all, from kindergarten through University. Educational levels are broken into:

  • Pre-elementary (ages 4 and 5),
  • Elementary – “Primario” (1st through 6th grade)
  • High School – “Secondario” (7th through 12th grade)
  • Superior (tertiary or university)

Education is mandatory until the end of high-school. Education is offered at public and private institutions, with 80% of the student body attending the public school system.

Free education, including at University level, is open to foreigners.

Private schools in Argentina

There are many private schools at all educational levels in Argentina.  Curricula and fees varies greatly and choices are numerous.  Most private schools have some form of bilingual program (typically Spanish and English).  With some exceptions, private schools are deemed to be better educational establishments.

Registering For School/University

To register in school in Argentina foreigners need to present the following information from the country of origin:

  1. Legalized birth certificate with apostille
  2. Criminal record certificate issued by country of origin for those older than 16 years old
  3. Valid passport
  4. Official school transcript or graduation certificate, legalized and with apostille
  5. All Russian language documentation must come with an official translation
  6. For children younger than 18 years old, need a letter from parent or adult undertaking the care of the minor until turns 18.
  7. Domicile certificate in Argentina, “Certificado de Domicilio”. This document serves as proof of your home address. Getting the certificate is an easy process. Go to the nearest police station or “Comisaría”, bring passport, pay a small fee and request the Certificate. Within 1 to 3 days, a police officer will come to your place to make sure that you are living there.  All you have to do is just show him (or her) your passport. He will then give you the Certificado de Domicilio. If you aren’t planning to be at home you can leave your passport with the building doorman (if you trust him).

After all the information is collected, you will need to request an appointment to submit the information by visiting https://www.migraciones.gov.ar/turnosAsesoramiento/verificar_jurisdiccion.php

Special needs education in Argentina

In Argentina, federal law mandates that all schools accept children with disabilities, but not all public schools are equipped to cater for the needs of children with special educational needs.  It is recommended that parents reach out to schools individually to determine what options are available and what the enrollment process entails.

Studying Spanish

One of the biggest struggles for Russians moving to Argentina is not being able to speak Spanish.  English is only sporadically spoken, and only in big cities. The language barrier can make things like renting an apartment, health care, education or banking difficult.  It is recommended that if you plan to move to Argentina try to learn at least some basic Spanish.  There are several online options available.
