Argentines and their Pets

Agentines love their pets!  Argentina holds the world record of being the country with the most pets per capita.  According to one study conducted by GFK, a marketing research firm, 80% of respondents from Argentina said that they had at least one pet vs. 56% of respondents globally.

To cater to furry family members, there are a multitude of dog-walkers for hire, dog parks and veterinarians.  There is even a discussion of making pet psychology a specialty area of study at the Veterinarian Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires.

Having said that, unfortunately, it is not uncommon to see stray, homeless dogs and cats on the street, especially in the poorer urban areas.

Bringing Pets into Argentina?

Given their openness to pets, you will not have issues bringing your pet into the country as long as you present the required paperwork.  To enter dogs or cats into Argentina, one must have an International Veterinary Certificate issued by a veterinary from the country of origin.  The certificate needs to be issued within 60 days of entry and comply with these requirements. In addition to this certificate, you will also need, the following documents translated into Spanish:

  1. Up-to-date Rabies vaccination
  2. Proof of dewormer treatment made within15 days of entry into the country.

If you are bringing non-traditional pets, you will need to comply with these requirements.
